the penalty nobody took

last week, the ultimate underdog Paraguay knocked out the 2014 champions, Germany, out of the World Cup in the round of 16

a huge upset that no one really saw coming

the game ended up in a penalty shootout after 120 minutes of even football

imagine walking towards that ball with a whole country depending on you

if you miss the final kick, you're destined to be ripped apart in the media the following day

but not this time..

Jonathan Tah from Germany missed his penalty and Paraguay advanced

yet, nobody talked about him

if they did, they only said positive things

because all of the attention was on Germanys most experienced player, Leon G, who refused to take the penalty which led to Tah (whos never taken a penalty before) ending up with the final shot

social media was filled with comments and posts that celebrated the courage of Tah

and every time one post encouraged Tah, there were two posts talking about the lack of ownership from Leon G

"What a world of difference a little context makes. I take back my comments on Tah. He stepped up when everyone else refused" - random guy on twitter

Tah put himself in a situation where the odds of greatness and failing were 50/50

a high stakes public bet

it takes a lot of courage and guts... and this is why most people are like Leon G

penalty kicks, content creation, making offers, being innovative or sharing your opinions, dreams and desires with the world

it's all "risky" because the winning outcome isn't guaranteed

and that is the whole point

getting the respect of others never includes NOT doing anything and keeping a "perfect" track record

sure, Leon G never missed a penalty

but he never scored one either

you miss 100% of the shots you don't take...

best, Fred

"Please Scale" Frederik Pahuus Be sure to always design your business first, and accept the life it gives you. Taking a sales call at 6pm is way more fun than having dinner with your partner of 7 years. She'll love you more because of it. If you had taken the call the next day, the deal would never have gone through. Impossible! And those Slack messages you answer on Saturday morning are super useful for your clients, it makes sure they can work all weekend instead of resting, thinking and...
